Following is an excerpt from a review from the Music Week column in the Louisville
Scene. The concert was Branford Marsalis at Phoenix Hill Tavern. And what
Louisville saxophonist did Branford ask to sit in? You got it!
During the second set, Marsalis concentrated on blues-rooted numbers that showed off the
improvisational skills of his band, which included Kenny Kirkland on piano, Jeff Watts on
drums and Robert Hurst III on bass. Louisville alto saxophonist Ron Jones sat in
with the band. (bold added)
Before the concert, Jones must have wondered if he might be served up
as a sacrificial lamb for Marsalis, but he more than held his own. He gave
interesting solos on each number that drew as much applause as Marsalis' solos.
